Mikroplastik gelangt auf verschiedenen Wegen ins Trinkwasser. Zunächst kann es über das Rohwasser in Flüsse, Seen und Grundwasser gelangen: Kunststoffabfälle zerfallen dort durch Sonne, Wellen oder mechanische Kräfte in kleine Partikel (<5mm), Abrieb von Reifen und Straßenbelag wird bei Regen in die Kanalisation und Flüsse gespült, Fasern aus synthetischer Kleidung wie Polyester gelangen über Waschmaschinenabwässer ins Wasser, und auch Industrie- oder Haushaltsabwässer können Mikroplastik aus Kosmetikprodukten oder Produktionsprozessen eintragen. Wasserwerke filtern zwar den Großteil des Mikroplastiks heraus, sehr kleine Partikel (<20µm) können jedoch teilweise die Filter passieren, und Kunststoffteile in Rohrleitungen, Pumpen oder Reservoiren können selbst kleine Partikel ins Wasser abgeben. Schließlich können auch Hausinstallationen wie Kunststoffarmaturen, Tanks, Schläuche oder Dichtungen Mikroplastik freisetzen, besonders wenn Wasser lange in Rohren steht oder die Rohre stark belastet sind.
