Hormones in tap water

How do hormones get into our tap water? 

In Germany, small amounts of hormones enter the drinking water, mainly through human and animal excrement and certain industrial inputs. The main routes are:

About human waste (largest proportion) 

  • Epidemiological studies provide evidence particularly for liver, bladder, and colon cancer. 
  • The body only partially breaks down these substances. 
  • Residues of the active ingredients enter the sewage system via urine and feces. 

Animal husbandry and agriculture

  • In intensive animal husbandry, animals naturally produce hormones (e.g., estrogens, progestogens). 
  • These can enter surface waters or groundwater via slurry or manure—especially when large amounts of fertilizer are used or there is heavy rainfall. 

Incomplete degradation in sewage treatment plants

  • Sewage treatment plants are very effective at removing many substances, but hormones are among the most difficult microsubstances to break down. 
  • Part of it will be dismantled, but not completely. 
  • The remaining traces end up in rivers and lakes, some of which are used to produce drinking water. 

Industry and cosmetics

  • Some hormone-like substances (e.g., plasticizers, UV filters) enter the environment via wastewater. 
  • They have an endocrine effect, but are not true hormones. 

How can hormones be removed from drinking water?

In the private sector, only high-performance filters such as ours are currently capable of removing 99.99% of such substances from the water.
