How does PFAS get into our tap water?
PFAS enter tap water in various ways, mainly through environmental pollution of soil and water.
Important sources include industrial wastewater, the spreading of sewage sludge, and the use of PFAS-containing firefighting foam by fire departments. From there, the chemicals enter water resources via groundwater and surface water and are then detected in tap water.

- Firefighting operations in which PFAS-containing foam was used are a significant source of contamination.
Wastewater and sewage sludge
- PFAS cannot always be completely removed during water treatment and accumulate in sewage sludge. If this sludge is spread on fields as fertilizer, the substances enter the environment and thus also the water cycle.
